Cross-Cultural Psychology Final Practice Exam

Moral reasoning in adolescence reflects how guiding principles differ across cultures, particularly between individualism and collectivism. When a culture prizes individual autonomy, rights, and universal principles, adolescents tend to justify moral judgments by appeals to justice and personal rights, often prioritizing fairness and abstract rules. In cultures that emphasize collectivism, where harmony, obligations to family and in-groups, and context matter more, adolescents reason about morality in terms of relational duties, social roles, and the impact on the group. They weigh duties and relationships alongside consequences, rather than applying universal principles in isolation. This focus on how people decide what is right depending on cultural values makes moral reasoning in adolescents the clearest lens for contrasting guiding principles across individualistic and collectivistic contexts. The other topics describe related areas (norms, behavior, identity) but do not center on the principled reasoning that reveals the cultural orientation of right and wrong.
